Enjoy it simply. To quote Michael Pollan (again...): Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. These simple words are his, now oft repeated, answer to the question of what to eat when there is a seemingly endless parade of options that confront the American palate. It is remarkably clear and sane advice for a public inundated with food options, nutritional claims, and heavy-handed marketing of new food options. I'd go on to argue that the fine food industry- with magazines, cooking shows, restaurant trends, and trendy "food-of-the-month" discoveries (rediscoveries of long-established and/or heirloom items typically)- could be included in this assault on food. (I implied it's arguable.) Some of the various "food movements," while doing a great deal to re-emphasize local, sustainable, organic (etc.), sometimes overemphasize their own dogma in the opposite direction. (I implied they do good overall.) If every bite of food or drink of wine becomes a political statement, or meal becomes symbolic of some movement, we've perhaps, once again, made eating about something other than the food. So, here at River Myst Haven, we've added a corollary to Mr. Pollan's creed: Enjoy it simply. The double meaning is intentional: find the joy in simple preparations of food and really enjoy your food thoughtfully. Several of us would add an additional element (though we don't all partake): With good wine. Essentially, we have a passion for food and are committed to the thoughtful experience of food and wines. Recently, we've hosted a winemaker dinner featuring fantastic local pinot noir paired with amazing menu selections, a French-themed birthday luncheon with fantastic wines, and a "farmer's market" cooking experience with...well, you get the idea. ~Timothy, General Manager |
